  18.  NeXT Embraces Photo CD Multimedia Imaging Technology

  20.  SAN FRANCISCO, May 25, 1993 - Kodak and NeXT Computer, Inc. today
  21.  announced that NeXT has embraced Kodak's Photo CD technology as
  22.  part of its multimedia strategy.  As part of this strategy,
  23.  NEXTSTEP Release 3.1 includes a demonstration application called
  24.  Photo Album that allows users to view high-quality images based on
  25.  Kodak's Photo CD standard.  NEXTSTEP Release 3.1 began shipping
  26.  today, for both Intel-based PCs and NeXT workstations.

  28.  Photo Album allows people to view their photographs on-line and to
  29.  create on-line scrapbooks or photo albums, using a CD-ROM drive to
  30.  store images developed with Kodak Photo CD processes.  Film shot
  31.  using a standard camera can be taken to a Photo CD Imagining
  32.  workstation-equipped processing outlet that develops the images for
  33.  CD viewing in addition to standard photographic prints.

  35.  "With the Photo Album demo application, NEXTSTEP is embracing a key
  36.  multimedia standard," said Margaret Chan, manager of NEXTSTEP
  37.  product marketing at NeXT.  "By including the Photo CD
  38.  compatibility with our system software, we hope to help awaken
  39.  users to the possibilities of on-line photographs.  We think
  40.  CD-ROM-based images will be increasingly important for wide-ranging
  41.  business, education, entertainment and personal applications."

  43.  NeXT is also porting Kodak's Photo CD Access Development Toolkit
  44.  for the NEXTSTEP environment.  This toolkit, which will work like
  45.  any other object-oriented toolkit for NEXTSTEP, will allow
  46.  developers to incorporate Photo CD-based capabilities into any kind
  47.  of application.

  49.  "We're looking to NEXTSTEP, as a premier object-oriented software
  50.  environment on the market today, to pave the way for Kodak's Photo
  51.  CD Access Development Toolkit," said Georgia McCabe, worldwide
  52.  manager, commercial CD Imaging of Kodak.  "Our long-term strategy
  53.  is to help developers create software that will let people interact
  54.  with photographic images in new and different ways."

  56.  As a demonstration application, and an additional step in NeXT's
  57.  technology directions, Photo Album will be provided free of charge
  58.  to all NEXTSTEP Release 3.1 customers, but it will not be supported
  59.  by either NeXT or Kodak.
